How to use Twitter Card Generator

  1. Choose the card type — summary_large_image for the full-width format almost every site uses.
  2. Fill in title, description and image URL (absolute https URL, 1200 × 630 px works for X and OG alike).
  3. Copy the generated tags into your page's <head>, alongside your Open Graph tags.
  4. Test by posting the URL in a draft on X — the card preview renders before you publish.

What is Twitter Card Generator?

A Twitter Card generator builds the meta tags that control how links render on X (Twitter): a card with title, description and image instead of a bare URL. The key choice is the card type — summary (small square thumbnail beside the text) or summary_large_image (full-width image above the text, the format virtually all publishers use because it occupies triple the timeline space).

The tags mirror Open Graph but use the name="twitter:…" attribute: twitter:card, twitter:title, twitter:description, twitter:image. X falls back to OG tags when Twitter tags are absent — so these tags exist to override or upgrade what OG provides, starting with forcing the large-image format.

About the Twitter Card Generator

Pick the card type, fill in title, description and image URL, and copy the complete twitter: meta block for your page's <head>.

Practical field notes: twitter:title truncates around 70 characters; twitter:description around 200 — a bit roomier than OG; twitter:image wants the same 1200 × 630 px (2:1 minimum 300 × 157) as Open Graph for large cards, so one image serves both protocols. Add twitter:site with your @handle to attribute the card to your account — it also enables analytics attribution on X.

Since X reads Open Graph as a fallback, the minimal efficient setup is full OG tags (our Open Graph Generator) plus just twitter:card = summary_large_image to force the big format — this generator produces the full explicit set for when you want X-specific values.

Frequently Asked Questions

X falls back to OG for content, but add at least twitter:card = summary_large_image — without it X may render the small summary card. The one-line addition upgrades every share to the full-width format.
For summary_large_image: 2:1 ratio, minimum 300 × 157, ideally 1200 × 630 — identical to the OG standard, so one image file serves both. For the small summary card: a square at least 144 × 144.
It credits the card to your X account (e.g. twitter:site = @tontontools), which can display attribution and ties the card to your handle in X's analytics. Use twitter:creator for the individual author on articles.
Check in order: tags actually served (view page source), image URL absolute and reachable, no robots block on the page or image (X's crawler respects robots.txt), and give X's cache up to a week — or post in a draft to force a fresh fetch.
Almost never for content. The small summary suits utility pages where the image adds nothing (logins, tools with no visual). For articles, products and posts, large image gets measurably more engagement — it is the default choice.
