What Is Lorem Ipsum and When Should You Use It?

What it is
Lorem ipsum is placeholder ("dummy") text derived from a classical Latin passage, scrambled so it's meaningless. Designers use it to fill layouts with realistic-looking text before the real copy exists.
Why not just type "text text text"?
The point is to show how a design looks with natural-feeling word lengths and flow — without the distraction of readable content. Real-but-unfinished copy pulls focus to the words; repetitive "text text" looks unnatural. Lorem ipsum sits in the sweet spot.
When NOT to use it
Never ship it live — leftover lorem ipsum on a published page looks unprofessional and confuses users (and search engines). It's strictly a placeholder for the design phase.
