Word and character counts aren't just for essays — they govern SEO titles, tweets, meta descriptions and ad copy. Knowing the limits keeps your content from being cut off.

Limits worth memorising

  • SEO title tag: ~60 characters before truncation.
  • Meta description: ~155 characters.
  • X/Twitter post: 280 characters.
  • Reading time: ~200–250 words per minute.

Words vs characters

Essays and articles usually have word targets; social platforms and meta tags enforce character limits (spaces sometimes count, sometimes not). Knowing which one applies prevents nasty truncation.

Our free word counter gives words, characters, sentences, paragraphs and reading time live as you type; the character counter and sentence counter drill into specifics. For titles, our title tag guide covers the SEO angle.

Bottom line

Match your text to the limit that applies — words for essays, characters for SEO and social — and use a live counter so nothing gets cut off. Reading time (words ÷ 200) is a nice bonus for setting reader expectations.
