Celsius to Fahrenheit: The Formula and Quick Conversions
A recipe in °F when your oven shows °C, or a weather report in the "wrong" scale — temperature conversion is a constant small friction. Here's how to handle it.
The exact formulas
°F = (°C × 9/5) + 32 and °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9. So 20°C = (20 × 1.8) + 32 = 68°F. Water freezes at 0°C/32°F and boils at 100°C/212°F.
The mental shortcut
For a rough °C→°F estimate: double the Celsius and add 30. 20°C → 40 + 30 = 70°F (actual 68 — close). It's not exact, but it's instant and good enough to know whether to grab a jacket.
A few anchors worth memorising
37°C = 98.6°F (body temperature), 180°C = 356°F (a common baking temp), −40°C = −40°F (the one point where the scales meet).
Convert any temperature
Our free temperature converter handles Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin instantly — no formula juggling.
Bottom line
Use °F = °C × 1.8 + 32 for accuracy, or "double and add 30" for a quick guess. Memorise a couple of anchors (body temp, freezing, boiling) and most conversions become second nature.
