How to Calculate Bandwidth and Hosting Data Needs
Hosting plans quote "bandwidth" and "data transfer" limits, and it's easy to overpay for capacity you don't need — or get throttled because you underestimated. Here's how to size it.
What bandwidth actually means
Monthly data transfer is how much data your site sends to visitors. Estimate it as: average page size × page views × a safety factor. If your pages average 2 MB and you serve 50,000 views a month, that's roughly 100 GB — before redundancy and growth headroom.
Don't forget the multipliers
Images and video dominate page weight, returning visitors reload assets, and you want spare capacity for traffic spikes. Add a comfortable buffer (1.5–2×) so a good day doesn't take you offline. Optimising images first (see our image optimization guide) cuts the requirement dramatically.
