"How old am I exactly?" sounds simple until you try to count the months and days by hand — leap years, different month lengths, and date boundaries all get in the way. Whether you need your age for a form, a document, or just curiosity, here's how to calculate it accurately.

The basic method

Start with the year difference, then adjust for the month and day. If today's month/day is earlier in the year than your birthday, subtract one year (you haven't had your birthday yet this year). The leftover months and days fill in the rest. It's the borrowing that trips people up — much like long subtraction.

Why leap years matter

February has 28 or 29 days, and "one month" isn't a fixed number of days, so counting in raw days and dividing by 30 gives the wrong answer. The correct approach counts calendar months and days separately, respecting each month's real length.

Let the tool do it precisely

Our free age calculator gives your exact age in years, months and days (and even total weeks, days and hours) from your birth date — no manual borrowing required. To measure any other gap between two dates, use the date difference calculator.

Bottom line

Your exact age is the year difference adjusted for whether your birthday has passed this year, with months and days counted on the real calendar — not by dividing days by 30. Let a calculator handle the leap-year edge cases and you'll always get it right.
