Spelling out numbers — on cheques, contracts, and in formal writing — has rules that aren't always obvious, and getting them wrong on a legal document can cause real problems.

The grouping method

Break the number into groups of three from the right (thousands, millions…) and name each group: 1,234,567 = "one million, two hundred thirty-four thousand, five hundred sixty-seven." The structure repeats predictably once you see it.

The common traps

  • Hyphens for twenty-one through ninety-nine.
  • "And" usage differs — British English uses "one hundred and fifty"; American often drops the "and."
  • Cheques: write the amount in words AND figures, and add "only" to prevent tampering.

Convert instantly

Our free number to words converter spells out any figure correctly, and the words to number converter does the reverse.

Bottom line

Group digits in threes, name each group, and mind the hyphens and "and" convention. For cheques and contracts, always pair words with figures — a converter guarantees you get the spelling exactly right where it legally matters.
