What is Torque Converter?

A torque converter (the unit kind, not the transmission part) translates rotational force between units — newton-meters to pound-feet, or kilogram-force meters to Nm. Torque is force times lever arm: one newton-meter is a one-newton push at the end of a one-meter lever. It is what tightens bolts, turns crankshafts and strips threads when you overdo it.

The SI unit is the Nm; US spec sheets and torque wrenches use pound-feet (1 lb-ft = 1.3558 Nm) and pound-inches for small fasteners (1 lb-ft = 12 lb-in); older Japanese and European manuals used kgf·m (9.8067 Nm). A workshop routinely meets all four, which is what this tool untangles.

The canonical use is the torque wrench: your manual says wheel nuts take 110 Nm but the wrench dial reads lb-ft — that is 81 lb-ft. Engine specs run the other way: an American truck boasting 400 lb-ft of torque has 542 Nm. Small fasteners (electronics, bicycle stems) are specified in lb-in or low Nm — a 5 Nm stem bolt is 44 lb-in, easily stripped by a full-size wrench.

Multiply by 0.7376 (or divide by 1.3558). Typical wheel-nut torque of 110 Nm is 81 lb-ft; an engine's 500 Nm is 369 lb-ft.
A factor of 12: 1 lb-ft = 12 lb-in. Pound-inches are used for small fasteners — a laptop or bicycle bolt spec of 4 Nm is about 35 lb-in.
Kilogram-force meter: the torque of 1 kg of weight on a 1 m lever = 9.80665 Nm. Older Japanese and European car manuals use it — a spec of 12 kgf·m equals 118 Nm or 87 lb-ft.
Beyond spec, the bolt stretches past its elastic limit and the threads or the part can strip or crack — and torque scales fast: guessing “a bit more” with a long wrench can double the applied torque.
Yes — both are rotational force in Nm or lb-ft. An engine producing 400 Nm at the crank applies the same physical quantity a torque wrench does; the difference is just scale and where it acts.
