What is Power Converter?

A power converter translates rates of energy use between units — watts to horsepower, kilowatts to PS, or megawatts to kilowatts. Power is energy per time: one watt is one joule per second. Where energy (joules, kWh) measures a quantity, power measures how fast it flows — the difference between a battery's capacity and its output.

Horsepower comes in two flavors this tool keeps separate: mechanical horsepower (745.7 W), the US standard for engines, and metric horsepower or PS (735.5 W), used across Europe and Japan for car specs. They differ by about 1.4% — small, but enough to matter in a spec sheet.

About the Power Converter

The classic use is car specs: a European car listed at 150 PS has 110 kW, which is 148 hp on an American spec sheet. It also handles household and industrial jobs: a 2,000 W kettle is 2 kW; a 5 hp pump motor draws at least 3.73 kW; a 50 MW power plant serves roughly 40,000 homes. Frequently Asked Questions

Mechanical horsepower is 745.7 W; metric horsepower (PS) is 735.5 W. So a 100 kW motor is 134 hp or 136 PS — always check which flavor a spec sheet uses.
PS (Pferdestärke, German for horsepower) is the metric version: 735.49875 W versus 745.7 W for US mechanical hp. A car rated 200 PS is 197.2 hp — about 1.4% less.
Kilowatts measure instantaneous draw; your bill charges kilowatt-hours (power × time). A 2 kW heater running 3 hours uses 6 kWh of energy.
Electric motors are rated in kW natively (it is the SI unit), and many markets require it. Multiply kW by 1.34 for hp: a 150 kW EV motor is about 201 hp.
One MW is 1,000 kW — roughly the average draw of 800–1,000 homes, or the peak output of a large wind turbine (modern ones reach 3–15 MW).
